HOYO DE MONTERREY
From José Gener to Zino Davidoff, it is, with Hoyo de Monterrey, more than one hundred years of history of the cigar that parade. Originally, a Catalan obstinate, formidable ambitious and autocratic like a tsar. José Gener is 13 when he immigrates to Cuba. He was 33 years old when, in 1851, he joined his uncle to found his first factory and create a new brand, La Escepción (thus spelled by the owners when they deposited it) which quickly became a success. Gener then buys a famous vega, Hoyo de Monterrey, located in the municipality of San Juan y Martinez – we can still see the portal today. In 1867, he broke up with his uncle, founded with his brothers company José Gener and launched the label Hoyo de Monterrey, whose rings were sometimes to the customer’s weapons.
Three years later, new repetition: the despotic José Gener remains alone in command, and his brothers are demoted to the rank of simple employees. For 30 years, José Gener will remain at the head of the José Gener y Batet, which markets Hoyo de Monterrey, José Gener and La Escepción to the US market. When he died in 1900, the Hoyo factory in Monterrey was the largest in Cuba.
